Description
This bronzed copper Indian Peace Medal bears the portrait of James Monroe and is cataloged as Julian IP-9, a distinct die variety from IP-8 within the Monroe peace medal series. The bronzed copper composition indicates a carefully finished striking where the copper surfaces were chemically treated to achieve a dark, lustrous brown patina that enhanced the relief and detail of the medal's design. The Julian IP-9 variety may represent dies cut by a different engraver or at a different point during Monroe's administration. The Mint maintained the capability to produce peace medals throughout each presidency, and replacement or variant dies were cut as circumstances required. Monroe's two terms saw extensive diplomatic activity with Native American nations, particularly as the government negotiated the removal of southeastern tribes from their ancestral lands. Bronzed copper was a favored finish for Mint medal productions intended for display or collection. The bronzing process — typically involving a chemical bath that oxidized the copper surface in a controlled manner — produced a more aesthetically pleasing and durable finish than raw copper, which would naturally develop an uneven patina over time. This treatment was commonly applied to medals sold through the Mint's medal department to collectors, institutions, and foreign dignitaries.
Rarity Notes
Bronzed copper striking of Julian IP-9 dies. The bronzed finish indicates production for collectors or institutional distribution rather than diplomatic presentation.
