Description
The circa 1850 bronzed copper Indian Peace Medal cataloged as Julian IP-30 bears the portrait of President Millard Fillmore. The bronzed copper finish distinguishes this from the standard bronze version, providing a darker and more lustrous surface achieved through chemical treatment at the Philadelphia Mint. Fillmore assumed the presidency on July 9, 1850 following the sudden death of Zachary Taylor, and served until March 1853. The obverse features Fillmore's right-facing portrait with presidential inscriptions, enhanced by the bronzed finish that deepens the contrast between the raised portrait and the medal field. The reverse carries the clasped-hands design with crossed peace pipe and tomahawk and the PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP motto. Fillmore's administration was particularly active in Indian diplomacy in the Pacific Northwest and the Great Basin, where the Oregon Donation Land Act of 1850 and subsequent territorial organization required extensive treaty negotiations with Native American nations. Indian agents in these remote territories carried peace medals as essential diplomatic tools for establishing relationships with tribal leaders who had limited prior contact with the United States government.
Rarity Notes
Bronzed copper finish is scarcer than standard bronze. Limited production with the specialized patination process.
