Description
The circa 1845 bronzed copper Indian Peace Medal cataloged as Julian IP-25 bears the portrait of President James K. Polk and is distinguished from the standard bronze version by its bronzed copper finish, which produces a darker, more lustrous surface through chemical treatment. This variant represents a more carefully finished production intended for presentation or premium collector sale. The obverse features Polk's right-facing bust with the presidential inscription and date of inauguration. The reverse carries the standard clasped-hands design with crossed peace pipe and tomahawk beneath the PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP motto. The bronzed finish enhances the relief detail and provides a more uniform appearance compared to untreated bronze. Polk aggressively expanded American territory through the Oregon Treaty with Britain in 1846 and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ending the Mexican-American War in 1848. These acquisitions brought millions of acres of Native American homeland under direct American jurisdiction, making the peace medal distribution program increasingly important as a diplomatic tool for establishing initial contact with tribes that had never previously dealt with the United States government.
Rarity Notes
Bronzed copper finish is scarcer than standard bronze. Limited production with the specialized patination treatment.
