(1881) Silver Medal J-IP-44, James A. Garfield
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The circa 1881 silver Indian Peace Medal cataloged as Julian IP-44 bears the portrait of President James A. Garfield in precious metal, representing a diplomatic presentation piece from one of the shortest presidencies in American history. Silver peace medals were reserved for ceremonial distribution to tribal leaders, and the extreme brevity of Garfield's 200-day term before his assassination makes silver examples exceptionally rare. The obverse features Garfield's right-facing portrait with presidential inscriptions, rendered in silver. The reverse carries the peace medal design. Given that Garfield took office on March 4, 1881 and was shot on July 2, the window for diplomatic medal distribution was vanishingly small. The existence of silver presentation medals from such a brief presidency reflects the institutional momentum of the peace medal program, where dies were prepared and medals struck as standard operating procedure regardless of external circumstances. Whether any silver Garfield peace medals were actually presented to Native American leaders during his brief tenure is a matter of historical uncertainty, as the few months of his presidency were consumed by patronage disputes and cabinet formation rather than Indian diplomacy.
Rarity Notes
Silver presentation medals from Garfield's 200-day presidency are extremely rare. Among the scarcest issues in the entire Indian Peace Medal series due to the minimal opportunity for diplomatic distribution.
