Description

The 1960s modern restrike of the Indian Peace Medal cataloged as Julian IP-27, bearing the portrait of President Zachary Taylor, was produced at the Philadelphia Mint during the twentieth century using either original or reproduction dies. Modern restrikes of Indian Peace Medals were struck beginning in the mid-twentieth century as collector interest in the series grew, providing affordable examples of designs that were becoming increasingly scarce in original production strikes. The obverse reproduces Taylor's right-facing portrait with presidential inscriptions from the IP-27 die variety. The reverse carries the standard clasped-hands design with crossed peace pipe and tomahawk and the PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP motto. Modern restrikes are typically identifiable through differences in metal color, surface texture, and sharpness compared to period-original strikes. The U.S. Mint has restruck various historical medals at different points to satisfy collector demand, and the Indian Peace Medal series has been among the most popular subjects for such reissues. The 1960s production date places this restrike during a period of growing public and academic interest in Native American history, when institutions and private collectors sought examples of these historically significant diplomatic artifacts.

Rarity Notes

Modern restrike produced in the 1960s in quantities sufficient for general collector demand. Substantially more available and affordable than original-era strikes.
