(1885) Silver Medal J-IP-46, Grover Cleveland
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The circa 1885 silver Indian Peace Medal cataloged as Julian IP-46 bears the portrait of President Grover Cleveland in precious metal, representing a diplomatic presentation piece from his first term. Silver peace medals continued to serve as the principal ceremonial gift presented to Native American leaders during treaty councils, reservation visits, and diplomatic meetings in Washington, where tribal delegations regularly traveled to negotiate with government officials. The obverse features Cleveland's right-facing portrait with presidential inscriptions, rendered in silver. The reverse carries the peace medal design. Silver examples were produced in very small quantities exclusively for presentation to tribal chiefs and headmen. Cleveland personally met with numerous tribal delegations during his first term, and the presentation of silver peace medals was a standard element of these formal encounters. The Cleveland presidency marked a late chapter in the peace medal tradition, as the reservation system was firmly established and the Dawes Act was reshaping the fundamental structure of Native American landholding. Silver peace medals from this era represent some of the last examples of a diplomatic tradition stretching back to the founding of the republic.
Rarity Notes
