(c.1975) Medal J-IP-46, Grover Cleveland Bronze Restrike
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The circa 1975 modern restrike of the Indian Peace Medal cataloged as Julian IP-46, bearing the portrait of President Grover Cleveland, was produced at the Philadelphia Mint during the twentieth century using either original or replacement dies. This bronze restrike was struck during a period when the Mint was producing restrikes of various historical medals to satisfy growing collector demand for the Indian Peace Medal series. The obverse reproduces Cleveland's right-facing portrait with the first-term presidential inscriptions from the IP-46 die variety. The reverse carries the standard peace medal design. Modern restrikes are typically distinguishable from original-era strikes through differences in surface texture, metal color, and edge characteristics. The 1975 approximate date places this restrike during the American Bicentennial era, when interest in historical American artifacts was at a peak. The U.S. Mint had been producing restrikes of popular historical medals throughout the twentieth century, and the Indian Peace Medal series was among the most requested. These modern productions provide collectors with affordable access to designs that are prohibitively expensive in original silver or bronzed copper formats.
Rarity Notes
Modern restrike produced circa 1975 in quantities sufficient for general collector demand. Substantially more affordable than original-era strikes.
