Description

This 34mm Denver Mint medal featuring Millard Fillmore is part of the Indian Peace Medal restrike series produced during the 1970s. Fillmore, the thirteenth president (1850-1853), assumed office following the death of Zachary Taylor and is best known for signing the Compromise of 1850, which temporarily defused the sectional crisis over slavery. His Indian policy coincided with the rapid expansion following the Mexican-American War and the California Gold Rush, which brought enormous pressure on Native American lands throughout the West. The "Indian Peace" reverse on the Fillmore medal reflects the evolved design used for presidents from this era. Original Fillmore Peace Medals were distributed to tribal leaders in California, Oregon, and the Great Plains during a period of intensive treaty-making and increasing conflict. The Denver Mint restrike ensures this relatively obscure president's contribution to the Peace Medal tradition is represented in modern collections.

Rarity Notes

Common. Denver Mint 1970s restrike. Fillmore is among the less collected presidents.
