Description

This bronzed copper Indian Peace Medal bears the portrait of John Tyler, the tenth President, cataloged as Julian IP-22. Tyler assumed the presidency in 1841 upon the death of William Henry Harrison after only one month in office, establishing the precedent of full presidential succession that would be followed for the rest of American history. Tyler's unexpected presidency lasted until 1845, during which time peace medals bearing his likeness were produced and distributed as part of the continuing diplomatic protocol with Native American nations. Tyler's administration was marked by the annexation of Texas in 1845, which had profound implications for Native American peoples in the Southwest and on the southern Plains. The expansion of American sovereignty into Texas brought the government into new conflicts with Comanche, Kiowa, and other Plains nations who had long resisted both Mexican and Texan authority. Peace medals from the Tyler era were distributed during treaty negotiations with tribes across the frontier, from the Great Lakes to the newly acquired territories. The Julian IP-22 bronzed copper version preserves Tyler's portrait in a collector format, depicting the Virginia politician who became an accidental president. Tyler's peace medals are less commonly encountered than those of his more prominent predecessors, reflecting his abbreviated and contested tenure.

Rarity Notes

Bronzed copper striking of Julian IP-22 dies. Tyler peace medals are less commonly encountered due to his brief presidency and limited diplomatic medal distribution.
