Description
Part of the Indian Head Half Eagles 1908-1929 series, the 1908 (D) Indian Head Half Eagle is a Gold Half Eagle from the Denver Mint. With a mintage of 148,000, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 18% of production. The obverse features a Native American chief wearing a feathered headdress, designed in incuse (sunken) relief — a revolutionary departure from traditional raised relief coinage and the reverse displays a standing eagle on a bundle of arrows with an olive branch, in incuse (sunken) relief. First year of the incuse half eagle. Philadelphia and Denver struck coins. Initial controversy over the sunken-relief design. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $1.4K to $2.5K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
