Sutler to the 45th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, the Washburn Lead Mine Regiment, organized at Galena, Illinois. The 45th Illinois fought at Shiloh, the siege of Corinth, and was the first Federal regiment to march into Vicksburg after its surrender on July 4, 1863, raising the regiment's national flag at the Vicksburg courthouse.
