Description
Civil War sutler token issued by Inglish & Nantz, sutler to the 32nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry. This 25-cent brass piece functioned as camp scrip, exchangeable for provisions and sundries at the sutler's traveling store. Sutler partnership serving the 32nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry, organized at Camp Butler, Illinois and mustered December 31, 1861. The 32nd Illinois fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Kennesaw Mountain, where the regiment planted the first colors on the enemy's works near Nickajack Creek. A 25-cent brass token (IL S-32-25B, R9, 16mm) graded PCGS AU55 sold at Heritage Auctions. Organized at Camp Butler, mustered December 31, 1861. Fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Kennesaw Mountain, where the regiment planted the first colors on enemy works near Nickajack Creek. Produced in brass, the workhorse alloy of Civil War-era private token manufacturers. The durability of the brass composition means that many surviving tokens retain legible inscriptions and identifiable design features. Struck during the wartime era when sutlers relied on privately issued tokens to facilitate daily transactions with soldiers.
Rarity Notes
Schenkman S-32-25B. All sutler tokens are rated R-5 or higher on the Fuld rarity scale (fewer than 200 surviving examples of any given variety). In brass, this variety falls within the common range for the series. An estimated 4,000 to 6,000 sutler token pieces survive across all varieties.
