Description
Civil War sutler token issued by 7th Indiana Regiment, sutler to the 7th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Struck in brass, this 25-cent token circulated as private camp currency redeemable for merchandise from the sutler. Sutler token for the 7th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. The token inscription abbreviates the regiment as 7TH IN. REGT. Indiana organized 152 infantry regiments during the war, and the 7th Indiana served from 1861 through 1865. One of the earliest Indiana regiments, organized in 1861. Indiana organized 152 infantry regiments during the war. The brass composition places this piece among the majority of surviving sutler tokens, which were struck in this durable alloy. Manufacturers obtained their brass blanks from the same commercial metalworking supply chains that served button makers and hardware producers. Manufactured during the peak years of sutler token production, when camp commerce required a reliable medium of exchange. Sutler tokens occupy a unique position in American numismatics, documenting both military service and wartime commercial enterprise. The restricted circulation of sutler tokens within individual camps means each surviving piece is traceable to a specific military community.
