Issued in vast quantities during 1861-1864, Civil War Patriotic Tokens filled the catastrophic small-change vacuum created when hoarding removed virtually all federal coins from circulation after the outbreak of hostilities. These privately struck copper tokens, roughly the size and weight of Indian Head cents, carried patriotic designs expressing Union loyalty — flags, eagles, shields, cannons, warships, and portraits of military and political leaders including Abraham Lincoln, George McClellan, and various generals. The Fuld reference catalog documents over a thousand distinct die combinations, making this one of the most extensive and varied series in American numismatics. Unlike Civil War store cards (merchant-issued tokens bearing business advertisements), patriotic tokens focused exclusively on political and military themes: "The Union Must and Shall Be Preserved," "Army and Navy," and similar slogans expressed the Northern war effort in metallic miniature. Some designs satirized the Confederacy or commented on wartime economic conditions, while others simply proclaimed allegiance to the flag and Constitution.
