Coin Details
Description
One side shows the anchor of Rhode Island on a shield beneath the word HOPE, the state motto, with the date 1844 below. The other names the first Republican presidential ticket of 1856: FREMONT & DAYTON / THE PEOPLES CHOICE around an eagle holding a shield, arrows and an olive branch. Neither side names a merchant or a town; Dayton is William L. Dayton, Frémont's running mate, not the Ohio city. Fuld catalogs the pairing as Patriotic Token 481/493, struck here in brass; a copper striking is F-481/493Ba.
