This represents the second-highest annual mintage in the series, above the series median of 7.8 million. The obverse features the Statue of Liberty with a geared background representing innovation and the reverse displays rotating designs honoring innovations and innovators from each state and territory. The introductory coin in the series depicts George Washington's signature alongside stylized gears, commemorating his signing of the first U.S. patent on July 31, 1790 — establishing the American patent system that would fuel centuries of innovation. Maine (personal computer accessibility), Louisiana (jazz music), Alabama (the Saturn V rocket — powering the Apollo moon missions), and Alaska (the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System). Struck in 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.49 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge.
