The introductory coin in the series depicts George Washington's signature alongside stylized gears, commemorating his signing of the first U.S. patent on July 31, 1790 — establishing the American patent system that would fuel centuries of innovation. New Hampshire (the first home video game system — Ralph Baer), Virginia (the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel), New York (the Erie Canal), and North Carolina (the first public university — University of North Carolina). Struck in 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.49 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge.
