The 2021 American Innovation Dollar is a United States dollar from the American Innovation Dollars 2018 to Date series. In 2021, the Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco Mints struck about 4.2 million American Innovation dollars, each issue counted once whichever way its edge lettering runs. The obverse features a profile of the Statue of Liberty with a small stylized gear privy mark, and the reverses honor innovations and innovators from each state, the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories. The introductory coin in the series depicts George Washington's signature alongside stylized gears, commemorating his signing of the first U.S. patent on July 31, 1790 — establishing the American patent system that would fuel centuries of innovation. New Hampshire (the first home video game system — Ralph Baer), Virginia (the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel), New York (the Erie Canal), and North Carolina (the first public university — University of North Carolina). Struck in 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.49 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Designed by Justin Kunz (obverse) / various reverse designers.
