The 2018 American Innovation Dollar is a United States dollar from the American Innovation Dollars 2018 to Date series — the first year of the series. In 2018, coins were struck at the Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Denver Mints. The obverse features the Statue of Liberty with a geared background representing innovation and the reverse displays rotating designs honoring innovations and innovators from each state and territory. The introductory coin in the series depicts George Washington's signature alongside stylized gears, commemorating his signing of the first U.S. patent on July 31, 1790 — establishing the American patent system that would fuel centuries of innovation. Introductory year featuring a single design depicting George Washington signing the first U.S. patent. This coin launched the program before the state-by-state rotation began in 2019. Struck in 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.49 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge.
