2020 (P) Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Strong northwest hub doubling across the hair, IN GOD WE TRUST, mintmark, and OF AMERICA — with lighter spread on UNITED STATES, LIBERTY, and QUARTER DOLLAR — establishes this as a doubled die obverse for the 2020 America the Beautiful quarter, cataloged by VarietyVista. The DDO-001 designation is the catalog entry for this doubled die obverse. The ATB program's 2020 issues honored five national sites, and the comment notation "RDV-053 (U.S. Virgin Islands)" identifies this as the Salt River Bay reverse design honoring the U.S. Virgin Islands. Hub doubling of this breadth — affecting hair detail, motto, mintmark, and legend simultaneously — indicates a substantial misalignment between hub and die during the second hubbing impression. Die stage tracking records UVC-2397, DMR-002, with Stage A showing both obverse and reverse at early die state, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The widespread nature of the doubling across the Washington portrait and the obverse legends makes this variety relatively easy to detect compared to varieties showing doubling on only a single element. ATB quarters were heavily collected during their production run.
