2018 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002

Description

Second in VarietyVista's catalog of doubled die reverses for the 2018 Philadelphia Mint Block Island National Park Quarter, DDR-002 displays medium spread from light hubbing directed south, producing an extra tip on feather number eight from the bottom of the bird's wing. Documented under UVC-2386 and DMR-003, four die stages chart the die's life: Stage A shows early die state, Stage B advances to MDS, Stage C reaches LDS, and Stage D documents VLDS before retirement. The Block Island design, depicting a black-crowned night heron in flight over a coastal scene, was the final 2018 America the Beautiful issue. The bird's detailed plumage provides fine design elements where hub doubling produces visible displacement, and the extra feather tip represents a localized but identifiable anomaly. Four documented die states for a single DDR reflects thorough specimen tracking across the die's entire production run, valuable for researchers reconstructing production sequences.
