Description

Also discovered by Mike Carroll, this 2011P(SAC)-100DER-001T trail die reverse variety appears on the 2011 Philadelphia Mint Native American Dollar in Position B — the companion die position to the Position A example sharing the same catalog number. Trail die varieties arise when residual design elements from a previously used die transfer onto a new working die during manufacturing, leaving subtle ghost impressions on finished coins. Both obverse and reverse are recorded in Early Die State at Stage A, with no additional markers noted. The distinction between Position A and Position B on Native American Dollars refers to rotational alignment of obverse and reverse relative to the edge-incused lettering — a feature unique to the dollar coin format begun with Presidential Dollars in 2007. The 2011 reverse design commemorates the Wampanoag Treaty and early diplomatic relations between Native Americans and European settlers. Collectors tracking trail die varieties across both positions can compare this Position B specimen against the Position A counterpart to assess whether identical trail marks appear on both orientations or each reflects a distinct die.

Die Markers
