Description
2011P-5DEO-002T is the second 2011 Philadelphia nickel obverse with trails in TrailDies' files. The number pairs the date and mint with 5 for the five-cent coin, DEO for a design extension on the obverse, file 002 and a closing T for trails. Here the lines come off the E in WE and the whole of TRUST and drop at 180°, due south. The coin TrailDies describes comes from a late stage of the die (C), with a small gouge at the top of Jefferson's hair and many small dots scattered over the left side of the reverse. It was found by Tanaka (Mikee) Davis. Most accounts put trails down to the die being polished with a rotary buff, while a minority favour movement of the die against the hub.
Die Markers
- Stage “C“, obverse is LDS – a small die gouge is seen in the top of Jefferson’s hair.
- Reverse is LDS – many small die dots are encountered on the left side of the reverse die.
