2011 (P) Jefferson Nickel - P-5DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Trails hang from the lower edges of the letters of LIBERTY and of the date on 2011P-5DEO-001T, pointing at 230°, southwest, toward the lower left. The code is TrailDies' shorthand for a 2011 Philadelphia nickel (2011P, 5) whose obverse (DEO) has a design extension, file number 001, with T for trails. On the middle-die-state coin described, a tiny die dot sits below Jefferson's right eye, and small dots cluster in and around FIVE on the reverse. Tanaka Davis found the die. Die polishing with a rotary buff remains the usual explanation for trails; a less common theory involves the die moving against the hub.
