2009 (P) District of Columbia Quarter - P(DC)-25MDEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

2009P(DC)-25MDEO-001T is coded a little differently from its neighbors: an M sits between the 25 and DEO, which the entry does not explain. Otherwise the number reads 2009 Philadelphia, District of Columbia quarter, obverse design extension, file 001, trails. Lines leave the lower right corners of RTY in LIBERTY at 140°, toward the southeast, and one line runs the opposite way from the top of the Y, at 320°, northwest. At the middle die state described, two scratches cross LLAR in DOLLAR, and the reverse has a crack on top of the piano; that reverse die is cross-referenced to WDDR-004, WDDR-012 and WDDR-015. Steven Bernatowicz found it. The standard account ties trails to die polishing with a spinning tool, and a less common one to movement of the die against the hub.

Die Markers

• Stage "B", obverse is MDS – two die scratches through the LLAR of DOLLAR.
• Reverse is MDS – a die crack is seen on the top of the piano. This die is also a doubled die, with slight doubling seen on the E of ELLINGTON.
