2009 (P) District of Columbia Quarter - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011

Description

Carrying the Wexler designation 2009-P 25¢ DC WDDR-011, this doubled die reverse on the Philadelphia-minted District of Columbia quarter is a DDR variety for the DC issue within the broader DC and US Territories Quarters program. The 2009 series represented a unique chapter in quarter coinage — instead of honoring states, it featured the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the US Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands, extending the successful state quarter concept to non-state jurisdictions. The DC quarter reverse, designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Don Everhart, portrays Duke Ellington seated at a piano with the inscription "JUSTICE FOR ALL" — a design rich in fine detail that makes it a productive canvas for hub doubling to manifest. No additional cross-references to CONECA, Cherrypickers, or other variety catalogs have been recorded for this DDR, and no specific die markers beyond the doubling have been documented. The high number of cataloged DDR varieties for this single date-mint-design pairing suggests that the die preparation process for the DC quarter encountered conditions favorable to misalignment during hubbing, possibly related to the complexity of the Ellington portrait design. Variety collectors examining rolls of 2009-P DC quarters should inspect the reverse under magnification for consistent directional spread on the lettering and portrait details.
