Description

Discovered by Steven Bernatowics and cataloged by Trail Dies, the 2009P(DC)-25DEO-005T is a trail die obverse variety found on the Philadelphia-minted District of Columbia Quarter from the DC and US Territories Quarters 2009 program. The DC Quarter features Duke Ellington seated at a piano on the reverse, designed by Don Everhart, representing the District of Columbia's contribution to American culture. The quarter was struck in cupronickel-clad copper at 5.67 grams and 24.3 mm diameter. Die markers document Stage C conditions: the obverse at Late Die State shows a die scratch to the right of the R in LIBERTY on John Flanagan's Washington portrait. The reverse, also at LDS, carries a notable dual attribution — it is identified as a doubled die listed as WDDR-006, making this a combination trail die obverse and doubled die reverse variety from the same die pair. Combination varieties that exhibit both trail die characteristics and hub doubling on a single coin represent particularly interesting pieces for specialists, as they document two distinct die-making or press-operation anomalies preserved together. The Late Die State designation for both sides indicates this die pair was well into its production run when specimens exhibiting these features were struck, and the die scratch on LIBERTY serves as the key obverse authentication marker.

Die Markers

  • Stage "C", obverse is LDS – a die scratch is seen to the right of the R in LIBERTY.
  • Reverse is LDS – the reverse is a doubled die; WDDR-006.
