2008P(HI)-25DER-003T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Found by Jimmy Ehrhart, the 2008P(HI)-25DER-003T is a trail die reverse variety on the Philadelphia Mint Hawaii State Quarter, one of the final issues in the fifty-state quarter program that concluded in 2008. Hawaii's reverse design features King Kamehameha I with the state outline and motto, providing detailed surfaces where progressive die deterioration can produce attributable trail features. This variety has been documented at Stage A, placing it at late early die state. The obverse, also at late early die state, shows a small tail extending from the bottom of the first T in TRUST as the primary pickup point. No specific reverse die markers have been noted beyond the trail die feature itself. Trail die varieties result from fine cracks or wear patterns in the die surface that transfer raised lines to struck coins, and their appearance at an early die stage indicates deterioration began soon after the die entered service.
