Description

TrailDies describes 2008P(HI)-25DER-001T as the first die of its kind: a Hawaii quarter reverse with two sets of trails, each running both ways along one line. The larger set, on the toe of King Kamehameha, the base of the statue, the 2 of the date and some letters of E PLURIBUS, points at 090° and 270°, east and west. The smaller set, on the designer's initials, points at 030° and 210°, north-northeast and south-southwest. The number reads 2008, Philadelphia, Hawaii (HI), quarter (25), reverse design extension (DER), file 001, trails (T). A stage B coin, with pictures from Ken Potter, has scratches above the DW initials; at stage C the obverse has gouges in the U of QUARTER and under the I of AMERICA. Bill Taschwer found it. Most specialists put trails like these down to polishing of the die with a rotary buff, while some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.

The first set, which is the major set, has trails from the toe of King Kumehameha, the base of the statue, the 2 digit in the date and some of the letters in E PLURIBUS. The offset directions for this set are 090 degrees and 270 degrees. The other set, which is minor, is located on the designers initials and have directional offsets of 030 degrees and 210 degrees. This is the first die of its kind. DIE MARKERS: Stage "C", obverse is ELDS – a die gouge in the U of QUARTER. A small die gouge under the I of AMERICA. Reverse is ELDS – none noted. NOTE: This die was found by Bill Taschwer.
