2008 (P) Hawaii State Quarter - P(HI)-25DEO-002T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Short, sharp trails run two opposite ways from the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on 2008P(HI)-25DEO-002T. One set leaves the top right corners of the letters at 010°, just east of north; the other points back the opposite way, at 190°, just west of south. The number reads 2008, Philadelphia, Hawaii design (HI), 25 for the quarter, DEO for TrailDies' obverse design extension, file 002, and T. The coin described is an early die state, with light diagonal scratches around LIB in LIBERTY and a slanting scratch over the 2 in the reverse date. Bill Taschwer found it. Die polishing with a rotating wheel is the generally accepted source of trails; a minority explanation is die-to-hub movement.

• Stage "A", obverse is EDS – light diagonal die scratches are seen around the LIB of LIBERTY.
• Reverse is EDS – a diagonal die scratch is seen over the 2 of the date.
