2008 (P) Hawaii State Quarter - P(HI)-25DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

TrailDies calls 2008P(HI)-25DEO-001T a true three-direction trail die. Its offset directions are 120° (east-southeast), 190° (just west of south) and 310° (northwest); LIBERTY carries two of them and the motto and the R of QUARTER one each, though the entry does not say which goes where. The code stands for a 2008 Philadelphia quarter of the Hawaii design, with DEO for the obverse design extension group and 001T for its file and type. At stage B the obverse has a small gouge between the A and R of DOLLAR and the reverse a small crack between the zeros of the date. A later stage C shows clash marks on Washington's neck, with heavy scratching that wiped out the reverse clash marks. William Taschwer of Ohio found the die, Steven Bernatowicz the stage C example. A rotary polishing buff applied to the die is the usual suspect for trails, though some instead blame movement of the die against the hub.

• Reverse is MDS – A small die crack between the two zeros of the date.
• Stage "C", obverse is MDS – die clash marks are seen on Washington's neck area.
• Reverse is MDS – heavy die scratching is seen to obliterate the clash marks left by the obverse die.
