Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2007-P $1 GW WDDR-005, this doubled die reverse variety appears on the 2007-P George Washington Presidential dollar. This listing represents the same variety as the one documented independently, with the Wexler Team's formal attribution confirming the variety's characteristics and providing the standardized cataloging used by collectors and dealers. The doubling shows at the intersection of the second ray clockwise from the head and the right arm of the Statue of Liberty, Don Everhart's common reverse design that appeared on all Presidential dollars throughout the series. Reverse markers include a short die scratch running ESE from the lower right of the second S in STATES, a die scratch running west to east through the top of the first A to the top of the M in AMERICA, and a die scratch running WSW from the rim to the right of the first A in AMERICA. The Washington Presidential dollar was struck in manganese brass composition (88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel), at 8.1 grams and 26.5 mm, with edge-lettered inscriptions. The Presidential Dollar program, which ran from 2007 to 2016 for circulation issues and continued for collectors thereafter, represented the first large-format U.S. dollar coin to carry a common reverse design across multiple obverse portrait changes. This consistency meant that reverse die varieties like WDDR-005 could theoretically appear on any obverse die pairing, though each individual variety is tied to a specific die pair confirmed through die marker analysis.
