Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as 2007-P $1 GW WDDR-003, this George Washington Presidential Dollar presents a doubled die reverse where the hub misalignment produced visible doubling at the intersection of the second ray clockwise from the Statue of Liberty’s head and the figure’s right arm — a junction point in the design where two converging elements amplify the visibility of even slight displacement between successive hub impressions. Obverse die markers fingerprinting this specific working die include a die gouge below the 7 in 1789 and a die gouge positioned below and between the 8 and 9 of 1789, both within the presidential tenure dates that frame George Washington’s portrait. The reverse carries a die gouge to the right of the center of the second A in AMERICA, a horizontal die scratch above the right side of the second S in STATES, and a die scratch running east from the top right of the second S in STATES. No additional cross-references to other attribution systems are known. The 2007 George Washington Presidential Dollar inaugurated the four-coins-per-year Presidential Dollar program that honored American presidents in order of service. Don Everhart’s Statue of Liberty reverse design depicts the iconic figure holding her torch aloft with radiating rays. The coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in manganese brass (88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel) weighing 8.10 grams with a 26.50 mm diameter. Edge-incused inscriptions include the date, mintmark, and IN GOD WE TRUST. The ray-arm intersection where the doubling appears represents a point of complex geometric convergence in the die design, making it particularly sensitive to hub displacement and thus a natural location for doubled die effects to manifest.
