CU-100c-2007P-01R(GW) Cud

Description

Cataloged in the Cuds on Coins registry as CU-100c-2007P-01R(GW), this cud error appears on the 2007 Philadelphia Mint Presidential Dollar honoring George Washington in Position A edge lettering orientation. A cud forms when a fragment of the die rim breaks away, leaving a void in the die face that produces a raised, featureless blob of metal at the coin's edge on every subsequent striking. The resulting raised area lacks any design detail, as the broken portion of the die can no longer impart its intended impression. On this George Washington dollar, the cud manifests on the reverse, where the missing die fragment created the characteristic smooth raised mass at the coin's edge. Presidential Dollars from the 2007 inaugural year saw substantial production volumes at both Philadelphia and Denver, and the high-speed striking process subjected dies to stresses that lead to rim fractures and cud formation. This variety was first documented on November 1, 2015, adding it to the census of die break varieties across the Presidential Dollar series.
