Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team on a 2007 Philadelphia Mint George Washington Presidential Dollar, WDDR-002 displays doubling at the intersection of the second ray clockwise from the head and the right arm of the Statue of Liberty — a precise and localized area of the reverse design. The Statue of Liberty reverse, common to all Presidential Dollars regardless of which president is honored on the obverse, features Lady Liberty holding her torch aloft with rays emanating from the crown, and the doubling at this specific ray-arm intersection indicates the hub shift concentrated its effect in that quadrant. Die markers are well documented: three die gouges can be found below the E in GEORGE on the obverse, while a die gouge protrudes from the bottom right of the second T in STATES on the reverse. These die-specific markers enable positive attribution even when the doubling is subtle. The George Washington Presidential Dollar, as the first coin in the series launched in 2007, received intense collector scrutiny that spurred comprehensive die variety documentation. No known cross-references exist in other attribution systems, making the Wexler catalog the primary reference. Presidential Dollars, struck from 2007 through 2016 (with later dates produced only for collectors), featured edge lettering carrying the date, mint mark, and motto — a departure from traditional face-inscribed information. WDDR-002 represents the second doubled die reverse for this specific issue, joining WDDR-001 in documenting hub doubling on the shared Presidential Dollar reverse design.
