Description
The 2005 (S) Proof Jefferson Nickel - Ocean in View is a proof nickel struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Jefferson Nickels Westward Journey 2004-2005 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 3,344,679 proof Ocean in View nickels dated 2005. The obverse is Joe Fitzgerald's new right-facing portrait of Jefferson, based on Houdon's bust and sculpted by Don Everhart, with LIBERTY in Jefferson's handwriting. The reverse is Joe Fitzgerald's view of the Pacific coast with Clark's journal entry "Ocean in view! O! The joy!", sculpted by Donna Weaver. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.21 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #94243.
