2005-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005
Error
Description
Struck as a proof at San Francisco, DDR-005 appears on the 2005-S "Ocean in View" Jefferson Nickel — part of the Westward Journey Nickel Series commemorating the Lewis and Clark Expedition's arrival at the Pacific coast. The doubling manifests as an extra lowest left branch on the right tree in the reverse design. Cataloged as UVC-1635 / DMR-006, four die stages have been documented beginning with VEDS (Very Early Die State), an uncommon designation indicating the earliest known impressions before any measurable die wear. The Westward Journey series (2004-2005) featured four unique reverse designs across two years, and the "Ocean in View" reverse — depicting the Pacific coastline — was one of only two designs used in 2005. Proof Jefferson Nickels are struck in the standard 75% copper / 25% nickel composition on specially prepared planchets with polished dies. Attributed by VarietyVista. The VEDS designation makes early-state specimens particularly desirable for collectors seeking the sharpest possible representation of the doubling.
