Description
Part of the Jefferson Nickels Westward Journey 2004-2005 series, the 2005 (D) Jefferson Nickel - Ocean in View is a nickel from the Denver Mint. The Denver Mint struck 411,120,000 Ocean in View nickels dated 2005. The obverse is Joe Fitzgerald's new right-facing portrait of Jefferson, based on Houdon's bust and sculpted by Don Everhart, with LIBERTY in Jefferson's handwriting. The reverse is Joe Fitzgerald's view of the Pacific coast with Clark's journal entry "Ocean in view! O! The joy!", sculpted by Donna Weaver. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.21 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4161.
