Description
The 2005 (D) Satin Finish Jefferson Nickel - Bison is a special strike nickel struck at the Denver Mint, part of the Jefferson Nickels Westward Journey 2004-2005 series. The U.S. Mint produced 1.2 million examples, making this the lowest mintage among 11 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features two different obverse portraits: a modified Schlag portrait (2004) and a new forward-facing portrait by Joe Fitzgerald (2005) and the reverse displays four commemorative designs: the Peace Medal (2004), Keelboat (2004), American Bison (2005), and Ocean in View (2005). A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Auction record: $588 SP69 01-06-2016 Heritage Auctions. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.2 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #94159.
