Description

Leading the doubled die reverse census for the 2005-S Proof Jefferson Nickel with the Ocean in View design, DDR-001 exhibits very strong spread appearing as a portion of the second and third left branches of the right tree duplicated in the field below. The bold duplication of tree branches creates an immediately recognizable diagnostic where ghosted branch segments appear in the field area beneath their normal positions. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1593 and DMR-002, three progressive stages are documented: Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in early die state, Stage B in mid-die state remains unconfirmed, and Stage C in late die state likewise awaits confirmation. This proof variety was found in the 2005 Westward Journey Nickel Series Coin Set, the special proof packaging commemorating the Lewis and Clark expedition's bicentennial. The Ocean in View reverse depicts the Pacific coastline that the expedition reached in November 1805. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at San Francisco for proof sets, this premier DDR for the proof Ocean in View design documents very strong branch duplication creating a visually dramatic effect on the commemorative reverse.
