Description
The 2005 (D) Jefferson Nickel - Speared Bison is a nickel produced at the Denver Mint as part of the Jefferson Nickels Westward Journey 2004-2005 series. The U.S. Mint produced 487.7 million examples, making this ranked 4th of 5 mint variants by mintage, with 22% of production. The obverse features two different obverse portraits: a modified Schlag portrait (2004) and a new forward-facing portrait by Joe Fitzgerald (2005) and the reverse displays four commemorative designs: the Peace Medal (2004), Keelboat (2004), American Bison (2005), and Ocean in View (2005). A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $1 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.2 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #84159.
