Produced at the Denver Mint, the 2005 (D) Jefferson Nickel - Speared Bison is part of the Jefferson Nickels Westward Journey 2004-2005 series. The U.S. Mint struck 487.7 million Bison nickels at Denver in 2005 in all; how many are Speared Bison examples is not recorded. The obverse is Joe Fitzgerald's new right-facing portrait of Jefferson, based on Houdon's bust and sculpted by Don Everhart, with LIBERTY in Jefferson's handwriting. The reverse is Jamie Franki's American bison, sculpted by Norman E. Nemeth. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906.
