The obverse features two different obverse portraits: a modified Schlag portrait (2004) and a new forward-facing portrait by Joe Fitzgerald (2005), while the reverse displays four commemorative designs: the Peace Medal (2004), Keelboat (2004), American Bison (2005), and Ocean in View (2005). Designed by Various — Norman E. Nemeth, Al Maletsky, Jamie Franki, Joe Fitzgerald. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.2 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Produced at the Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco Mints. The 2004-2005 Westward Journey Nickels commemorated the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Four unique reverse designs told the story of the expedition, while the 2005 coins introduced a new forward-facing Jefferson portrait. Popular as a modern set. The 2005 Bison reverse by Jamie Franki became instantly iconic.
