Description
The 2005 (D) Satin Finish Jefferson Nickel - Ocean in View is a special strike nickel struck at the Denver Mint, part of the Jefferson Nickels Westward Journey 2004-2005 series. The Denver Mint struck 1,160,000 satin-finish Ocean in View nickels dated 2005. The obverse is Joe Fitzgerald's new right-facing portrait of Jefferson, based on Houdon's bust and sculpted by Don Everhart, with LIBERTY in Jefferson's handwriting. The reverse is Joe Fitzgerald's view of the Pacific coast with Clark's journal entry "Ocean in view! O! The joy!", sculpted by Donna Weaver. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.21 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #94161.
