Description

Found in the Westward Journey Nickel Set, DDR-003 is a proof doubled die reverse on the 2005-S Jefferson Nickel featuring the Ocean in View reverse design commemorating the Lewis and Clark expedition's arrival at the Pacific coast. The doubling presents as strong spread manifesting as second and third branches of the right tree in the field below the primary design, creating a ghostly secondary image of the foliage. Cross-referenced as UVC-1595/b and DMR-004 in the VarietyVista catalog, this variety has been documented across three die stages: Stage A in early die state, with Stages B and C capturing mid and late die state conditions that remain unconfirmed. As a proof struck at San Francisco on specially polished planchets with polished dies, the mirror-like surfaces enhance the visibility of the doubled branches against the reflective field. The 2005 Westward Journey series represented one of the most ambitious redesign programs in Jefferson Nickel history, temporarily replacing both the traditional obverse and Monticello reverse with designs celebrating the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition.
