Description

ADC-5c-2005-01 While not a particularly strong clashing of the dies, it is the only one that has been seen for this denomination with the bison on the reverse. Nicknamed the “peeing bison”, the clash is mostly isolated to the area beneath the bison’s stomach. The overlay provide shows the relative position of the dies when they did clash. This coin comes to the site by courtesy of  Troy Watkins. This may be a relative hard die clash to find for it appears that the areas affected with clash marks were abraded and the marks removed. Compare the two pictures of the obverse die to the left. The top die picture shows the clash marks left by the reverse, while the second picture down shows the clash marks removed. Notice the die marker on Jefferson’s nose is the same in both the pictures indicating that this is the same die. The two pictures show the same sequence of events with the third picture showing a close up of the die clashes and the last picture showing their removal. By abrading the die, it caused another error type to be formed. The upper portion of the bison’s left leg has been abraded off, creating a detached leg error.
