Description

Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, this spiked head variety appears on the 2005-P Jefferson Nickel with the Bison reverse, struck at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Westward Journey Nickel Series. This Philadelphia counterpart to the Denver Bison spiked head demonstrates that die crack phenomena producing spiked heads occurred independently at both facilities during production of this one-year-only design. The 2005 obverse is Joe Fitzgerald's right-facing portrait of Jefferson, based on Houdon's bust. This variety adds to the documentation of portrait-area die failures on the 2005-P Bison nickel.
