2004 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-002WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Mark Holmoe of Arizona found 2004D-1DER-002WS, a 2004 Denver cent reverse (2004D, 1, DER for reverse design extension, file 002, WS for wavy steps). The effects are light throughout: fluting from columns 2 and 3 reaches into the stylobate, and the steps under columns 5 to 7 bend, more on the left. Wavy steps means trails crossing the Memorial's stairs. All lines run at 180°, due south. The coin TrailDies describes is at a late die state, with a gouge right of the date's 4 on the obverse; the reverse has a small gouge below the E of STATES and gouges inside the U of UNITED. Trails are generally blamed on rotary polishing of the die, though a minority credit the die moving against the hub.
