Description

The premier doubled die reverse variety for the 2004-D Lincoln Memorial cent, WDDR-001 results from an apparent counterclockwise spread produced by a tilted hub that twisted as it returned to alignment. The doubling shows as a spread to the west on EPU and all of the dots, a spread to the north on the right ceiling of the Memorial, and a spread to the south on the left floor of the Memorial and the top of the post left of the steps. Cross-referenced as Crawford CDDR-005, Coppercoins 2004D-1DR-001, and CONECA 1-R-IV+VIII, this variety is attributed by the Wexler Team as Wexler Variety ID 2004-D 1¢ WDDR-001. Die markers confirm the attribution: a die gouge at the rim above the O in GOD on the obverse; on the reverse, die gouges southwest of the E in EPU, a die gouge between the dot and the first U of UNUM, and a die gouge above the upper left T in CENT. Tilted-hub doubling is mechanically fixed in the die, so every coin struck from it shows the same directional spread at the same locations. The 2004-D cent is copper-plated zinc. Collectors should focus on the EPU lettering and Memorial ceiling and floor areas under magnification to identify the characteristic spread.
