2003 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-001WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Bob Piazza of Florida found 2003D-1DER-001WS, a 2003 Denver reverse. Light fluting lines enter the stylobate below columns 2 and 3, and light step deviation runs under columns 5 through 8, heavier on the left. The heading gives the direction as 180°, due south. Its number pairs the Denver date 2003D with the cent's 1 and the reverse code DER, then gives file 001 and WS, wavy steps, in which trails cross the stairs and bend them. The coin is late on both sides: gouges surround LIBERTY and one sits left of the mint mark, while the reverse shows short, light scratches coming off the Memorial's base, a gouge above FG, and parallel scratches from the right tip of the base. Polishing the die with a rotary buff is the explanation most give, while some see the die moving against the hub.
