Description
Moderate deviation affects the stairs under columns 5 through 8 on 2002D-1DER-005WS, a 2002 Denver cent reverse, with the offset at 180°, due south. The first block of the code is the year and mint, then come the denomination digit 1, DER for the reverse, the file 005, and WS, marking wavy steps: trails that cross the Memorial's staircase so the treads appear to bend. The middle-die-state coin has a gouge just right of the E of WE on the obverse and a small gouge over the right half of the M in UNUM on the reverse. Jeremy Gardner found the die. Trails are commonly linked to polishing of the die with a rotary buff, though some link them to the die moving against the hub.
Die Markers
- Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – a die gouge is seen to the right of the E in WE.
- Reverse is MDS – a small die gouge is seen just above the right side of the M in UNUM.
