2002 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-004T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Jean Lee found 2002D-1DER-004T. Its trails are limited to the lower left corners of a few letters in E PLURIBUS UNUM and run to 250°, west-southwest, toward the lower left. A 2002 Denver cent reverse, it sits at file 004 in TrailDies' DER (design extension reverse) listings, and the T suffix marks it as a trail die. Both dies are late on the coin described. Nothing is noted on the obverse, but the reverse has a gash just right of the A in STATES and die damage inside the U of UNITED. Polishing of the die with a rotary buff is the explanation TrailDies' field generally accepts, and the other view is that the die moved against the hub.
